Disrupting the Dominant Design of Transportation Procurement with Dr. Chris Caplice

May 07, 2021 at 11:00AM - May 07, 2021 at 12:00PM

For over 30 years, truckload transportation procurement has followed the dominant design of an Annual RFP to collect fixed contract rates that are fed into static Routing Guides. Recent experience and analysis show that this two-stage procurement process (Award and Tender) commonly fails and shippers have to spend additional effort to secure truckload capacity. This session discusses how shippers, carriers, and brokers can improve the transportation procurement and management process.

This event is open to MIT CTL Supply Chain Exchange members and their guests. Learn more about becoming a...

Distribution Network Resilience During Disasters with Tim Russell and Shraddha Rana

Apr 02, 2021 at 11:00AM - Apr 02, 2021 at 12:00PM

Shraddha and Tim present their research to develop analytical concepts and tools that FEMA can employ to improve supply chain resiliency and adaptability during crises. They will focus on fuel, as it is the lifeblood for emergency response necessary for freight movement, emergency response vehicles, and backup generators. During natural disasters, the increased demand for fuel is met with distribution infrastructure and processing constraints. We use discrete event simulation to model the movement of gasoline from fuel terminals to retail stations in Florida and identify interventions that...

Human-AI Collective Intelligence: Applications in SCM with Dr. Maria Jesus Saenz

Mar 05, 2021 at 11:00AM - Mar 05, 2021 at 12:00PM

Artificial Intelligence deploys the ability of a machine to perform cognitive functions associated with human minds such as perceiving, learning, interacting with the environment, problem-solving, among others. But some supply chain decisions require more than the formal rationality that underpins AI algorithms, they will need to use the substantive rationality of humans. In our research at the MIT Digital SC Transformation Lab, we research on humans and AI’s complementarities and identify different configurations of human-AI collective intelligence for applying AI more successfully. We will...
