Issue Description

This issue of the MIT Center for Transportation & Logistics eJournal focuses on the transformative role of artificial intelligence in modern supply chains, highlighting research that examines how data-driven algorithms and intelligent systems are reshaping decision-making, coordination, and performance across industries. The featured papers explore AI’s applications at multiple levels: from predictive analytics that enhance forecasting and inventory management to machine-learning tools that improve agility and responsiveness under uncertainty. Multiple studies assess how AI supports resilience by enabling adaptive planning, supplier network optimization, and real-time logistics control, while others analyze systemic implications, such as the reconfiguration of market structures, data ecosystems, and workforce capabilities as automation increases and intelligence deepens. Collectively, these works demonstrate that AI is not merely an operational enhancement but a strategic tool, accelerating the shift from reactive, efficiency-focused supply chains to proactive, learning-oriented systems. By integrating insights on technology adoption, organizational transformation, and policy implications, this issue underscores how AI can help supply chains evolve into intelligent, transparent, and resilient networks capable of thriving amid volatility and complexity.
