Abstract

Supply Chain Frontiers issue #43

Zaragoza Logistics Center (ZLC) and the University of Catalonia Center for Transportation Innovation (Centro de Innovación del Transporte de la Universidad de Cataluña or CENIT) have launched a project with DHL Supply Chain to streamline goods delivery services in urban centers.

Financed by Spain’s Ministry of Science and Innovation the project is called MEDUSA, and it aims to develop urban micro-platforms for the consolidation of goods. Use of the platforms will improve the productivity of transportation companies and reduce the flow of heavy vehicles in city centers.

The researchers are designing a Decision Support Tool (DSS) for the implementation of the micro-platforms. DSS will include a module that combines the physical design – location and size – with the operational management of the platforms. A second module will determine the optimal business model for the financial management of the concept to ensure its economic feasibility.

DHL Supply Chain is collaborating with ZLC and the University of Catalonia Center for Transportation Innovation on the project, and is also coordinating the work.
