Abstract

Supply Chain Frontiers issue #39

The Center for Latin American Logistics Innovation (CLI) has a new strategic partner: Carvajal, Colombia’s leading international business group.

Founded in 1904, the organization makes and distributes products in a number of sectors including paper, school and office supplies, packaging, furniture, publishing, printing, process outsourcing, information management, and business services. There are 11 companies in the group - Assenda, Bico, CARPAK, Cargraphics, Carvajal Services, Grupo Editorial Norma, Mepal, Music, Propal, Publicar, and contact center Americas – and it has a presence in 18 countries in Europe, Latin America, and the United States.

The organization’s strategic focus is on diversification and international growth. The current corporate structure was created in the 1990s to increase operational efficiency by encouraging each component business to concentrate on its core markets. Carvajal Services SA was created as an integral outsourcing company that provides administrative and management support in human resources, finance, logistics and general services.

The group joined CLI to help consolidate its share service center, improve the organization’s negotiating skills, and to develop a culture that values logistics as an important link in the value chain, explains Oscar Darío Morales, finance VP of Carvajal Internacional. "We are aware of the need to obtain knowledge in logistics at a national and international level, to learn from best practices and successful cases and develop research projects specifically for our needs. With the help of CLI we want to turn logistics into a top-level area, and a good source of business profitability and better customer service," he says.

With the addition of Grupo Carvajal, CLI now has 13 strategic partner companies working on research projects in logistics and supply chain. "Having Grupo Carvajal as a partner is a challenge for CLI given the complexity of its business. We expect this partnership to contribute to the group’s consolidation as a multinational leader and source of expertise in supply chain strategy in Latin America,” says Isabel Agudelo, Executive Director CLI.
