Abstract

Supply Chain Frontiers issue #38

A two-day inaugural conference on radio frequency identification (RFID) technology held in Bogotá, Colombia, underlined the rapid progress that Central American and South American companies are making in improving their business operations through the use of RFID.

Produced by the publication RFID Journal in partnership with nonprofit consulting and training firm LOGyCA, the first RFID Journal Live! Latam conference took place from August 31 to September 1, 2010. A second event is planned for 2011 in Colombia and possibly in México as well.

This year’s event attracted more than 200 attendees from various countries, including Argentina, Brazil, Ecuador, México, Spain, the United States, and the host country Colombia. They heard how leading Latin American companies from a wide cross-section of industries are successfully deploying RFID to track assets, manage inventories, improve customer service, and much more.

The expert speakers from industry and academia included:

  • Mark Roberti, founder and Editor, RFID Journal.
  • Rafael Flórez Barajas, CEO, LOGyCA and GS1 Colombia.
  • Luis Vicente Ortega, Dynamic Response Manager at Mexican retailer Liverpool.
  • Ian Robertson, Director of Global Industry Development, GS1 EPCglobal US.
  • Sonia del Pilar Acuña Durán, Director of Information Technology and Communications, National Federation of Coffee Growers of Colombia.
  • Dr. Sanjay Sarma, Massachusetts Institute of Technology Professor of Mechanical Engineering and cofounder of the Auto-ID Center at MIT, US.
  • Pankaj Sood, researcher and founder of the McMaster RFID Applications Lab, Cambridge University, UK.

“Latin America has been behind Asia, Europe, and North America in exploring RFID’s potential. It is now starting to catch up, and that is reflected in the speakers from the region who participated at the conference,” said Mark Roberti, Editor, RFID Journal.
