Leon Daniels joined Transport for London in April 2011 as Managing Director, Surface Transport. Surface Transport provides and manages a broad range of sustainable transport choices and has an annual operating expenditure of over £2.5 billion. In his role as Managing Director, Daniels is responsible for the safe and efficient delivery of London's bus, taxi and river services, street management, congestion charging and the Barclays Cycle Hire scheme, as well as the requirements in those areas for the 2012 Olympic Games. He came from FirstGroup PLC where he had been a Director of the UK Bus Board since 2000. For several years Mr. Daniels owned and ran his own bus company which grew to be the largest private sector bus company in London prior to the privatization of London Buses.

In 1998 the business was sold to FirstGroup PLC and Daniels consented to stay with the company for six months to see through the transition.  He then stayed with First for ten years managing First’s entire London bus business management and then as Divisional Director for London & South East.

In the spring of 2004, he became one of the members of the new UK Bus Board and in his position as Commercial Director he was responsible for all passenger-related issues across UK Bus, as well as fares and tickets policy, yellow school buses, marketing, business development, stakeholder relationships and the revolutionary FTR project.

From 2008 to 2011 Daniels was the Customer Service & Communications Director for UK Bus at FirstGroup PLC where he was responsible for marketing, public relations and customer services.
