MIT FreightLab Co-Director David Correll was interviewd by UK-based news outlet Supply Management about driver detention, and how supply chain pressures could be eased by allowing drivers to spend more time on the road.

I'm one of several people who think that shortage is an imprecise term for the problem. I think the relevant measure isn't the headcount of drivers, but it's the hours of driving… It consistently comes out, across around 4,000 drivers we've looked at over a period of four years, that they drive for around six and a half hours per day. If we got the drivers that we already have more driving hours every day, if we could find 18 more minutes for them, perhaps they could alleviate these pressures that people are describing as a shortage.
