This MIT Global SCALE Network webinar explores how supply chains are being transformed from three complementary perspectives: how strategy and leadership have to be deployed to reach impactful SC transformation, how AI-driven algorithms are developed to improve operations, and finally, the role of data-driven decisions supported by AI to enhance efficiency and interpretability. How Dell Leads SCs Using AI

AI-driven digital transformation seems to be a supply chain imperative nowadays. However, too many companies take too long to accomplish their goals only to be disappointed by the results. Here, we present how Dell’s Supply Chain avoided these common pitfalls. The alignment of strategy from top leadership with a clear and collective supply chain vision, together with the right KPIs, data, and technology, created new business opportunities and new capabilities for Dell.

How does Samsonite run SC algorithms with AI

Dr.-Ing. Yasel Costa, Professor and PhD Program Director at ZLC

This short presentation shows the use of bio-inspired AI algorithms to improve outbound logistics at Samsonite Chile S.A. The company has to plan daily delivery routes under hard constraints that include dispatching a heterogenous fleet of vehicles and very strict time windows (late delivery penalties) imposed by customers. The AI-based algorithmic proposals resulted in significant cost savings (24%), a large reduction in fleet size (25%) and very efficient solution time.

Data and AI are increasingly integral to decision-making processes. This talk will explore their role in enhancing decision efficiency and discuss the role of interpretability for successful implementation, offering examples and insights from practice.


Speaker Bios

Dr.-Ing. Yasel Costa, Professor and PhD Program Director at ZLC

Dr. Yasel Costa is an Industrial Engineer from the Central University "Marta Abreu" of Las Villas, Cuba. He obtained his Doctor-Ingenieur degree from the prestigious German institution Otto-von-Guericke University. His research interests cover diverse topics in the field of supply chain network design, sustainable operations and green vehicle routing problems. He has authored and co-authored several articles in peer-reviewed journals such as TR-Part E, IJPE, C&IE, JCP and ESWA. Dr. Costa is currently Director of the PhD Program in Logistics and Supply Chain Management, Director of the PhD Summer Academy and Professor of Supply Chain Management at the MIT-Zaragoza International Logistics Program, Zaragoza Logistics Center.


Dr. Maria Jesus Saenz, Director of the MIT Digital SC Transformation Lab at MIT CTL

Dr. Maria Jesus Saenz is the Director of the  Digital Supply Chain Transformation Lab at the MIT Center for Transportation and Logistics. The primary research examines new collaborative paradigms that arise while implementing new digital technologies in supply chains. Our research applies quantitative research methodologies in order to assess how data-driven ecosystems create value. Dr. Saenz also serves as the Executive Director of the MIT Supply Chain Management Master Program. With more than 25 years of experience, Dr. Saenz has also led various international research projects for the European Commission, as well as for companies such as Coca-Cola Femsa, Mondelez, P&G, Carrefour or Dell. She has received 17 awards and is co-author of more than 100 publications, including Harvard Business Review, WSJ, MIT Sloan Management Review, Forbes, Financial Times Press or Supply Chain Management Review.


Prof. Çağıl Koçyiğit, Assistant Professor at the Luxembourg Centre for Logistics and Supply Chain Management

Çağıl Koçyiğit is an assistant professor at the Luxembourg Centre for Logistics and Supply Chain Management, University of Luxembourg. Her research focuses on optimization under uncertainty with applications in mechanism and policy design, learning and optimization for resource allocation, fairness and equity. She holds a Ph.D. in Management of Technology from École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne.
