Transportation procurement has undergone tremendous changes over the last few years. The capacity crisis of 2018, followed by a freight recession in 2019 and a pandemic, forced shippers, carriers, and brokers to reassess their procurement process. While the idea of managing a portfolio is common for financial investments, shippers have only recently been using portfolios actively to procure capacity. This roundtable will help us better understand how shippers should consider using a mix of dedicated, contract, and spot relationships to secure truckload transportation. We will present recent research from MIT’s FreightLab and elsewhere and discuss potential follow on study.
