This month’s First Fridays briefing we take a bit of a whimsical diversion. On July 9, we will share some research insights not from our MIT team but from a very valued colleague and friend, Kevin O’Marah, Chief Storyteller, Amazon Last Mile DSP.

In this session, Kevin will share some of his insights from his recent work at Amazon. The COVID-19 pandemic has shone a light on supply chain’s heroic role keeping people fed and safe in a time of crisis. Given this historic moment, how can supply chain professionals strike the right chord to communicate what we do and inspire action? This session applies classical storytelling principles and examples from Unilever, Apple, Boeing, General Mills and Amazon to:

  1. Give a big-picture view of how supply chain management affects the wider world;
  2. Deep-dive on supply chain details that unlock topline business competitiveness;
  3. Use relatable, everyday examples that show how we as consumers dictate what happens to inspire practical, large-scale consumer activism.

Many of you may know Kevin and his work: He led supply chain research during an 18-year Gartner career (specifically with AMR Research and SCM World, both acquired by Gartner). During that time, Kevin published over 1,000 articles, both for Gartner and for external publications including the Financial Times, Business Week, and Harvard Business Review, and created Gartner’s Supply Chain Top 25. Kevin brings a long history of research and engagement with industry, and has worked actively as a research fellow with our colleagues at Stanford’s Global Supply Chain Management Forum and at the University of Tennessee’s Global Supply Chain Institute.
