Abstract

Supply Chain Frontiers issue #51

A new book from Dr. Albert Tan, Director of Education at the Malaysia Institute for Supply Chain Innovation, titled Supply Chain Process Reengineering (Pearson Malaysia, 2013), provides a roadmap to the planning and implementation of SPR projects.

As Tan points out in his book, SPR is not a reorganizing or restructuring; it is a fundamental redesign of supply chain processes that spans multiple functions. These projects must be thoroughly planned from initialization to implementation, and Dr. Tan lays out a series of steps to help managers accomplish this.
The book details other vital elements of SPR such as analyzing supply chain processes, and how to approach the process redesign task. Eleven redesign principles for transforming supply chain processes help teams to focus on areas that may be in need of a rethink.
Last but not least, a number of case studies are provided to give practical insights into how different types of organizations approached SPR. These accounts bring SPR to life and underline how rethinking certain processes can have a significant impact on the performance of the business.
