The Center for Transportation and Logistics: Master of Engineering in Logistics (MLOG) program is celebrating its fifth anniversary this May.

Created in 1999, the unique program in logistics has become the leader in the field. The number of applicants has grown by over 35% annually since its inception, and MLOG has produced over 100 graduates many of whom now occupy senior positions in major retailing, manufacturing, transportation, software, and consulting firms.

The program's successful quinquennial was the first year for new Executive Director Chris Caplice, MIT alum and graduate of the department's PhD program. Under his direction MLOG was honored with its third consecutive first place ranking in US News and World Report among all business programs in the area of logistics and supply chain management. The program was also profiled in a recent Wall Street Journal article, which highlighted the growing number of logistics jobs in the United States.

"MLOG is unique in that it addresses the supply chain from both engineering and management perspectives," said Caplice. By teaching students change leadership skills along with an analytical approach, they "learn how to assess a supply chain, develop potential solution strategies, and implement the changes required to the supply chain, organization, and processes," he explained. In other words the emphasis is not so much on math, but on teaching students how to methodically analyze supply chains and make changes where and when necessary

MLOG will celebrate its fifth year with a reunion to be held May 24th. The event will include an MLOG Lunch & Open House and an Alumni dinner at the MIT Faculty Club. Alums also will be able to participate in the Center for Transportation & Logistics Conference entitled "Supply Chain Flexibility", May 25 to May 26, 2004.
