Abstract

The MIT Center for Transportation and Logistics (CTL) initiated the “At the Crossroads of Supply Chain and Strategy” annual conference to highlight the emerging importance of supply chain management and the increasingly important role in supporting corporate business strategy.

The Crossroads 2010 event focused on building supply chains that deliver sustainability. This day-long symposium featured presenters from both academia and industry who provided insights into the risks, opportunities, and emerging solutions to creating long-term sustainability. Achieving sustainability means that managers must look beyond the short-term financial bottom line to consider the system-wide implications of supply chains decisions. Numerous terms have been used to describe this broader issue, the most common being the “triple bottom line” of economic, environmental, and social performance.
