A milestone in the evolution of education in the supply chain field was reached at the end of September, with the one-millionth enrollment in the MITx MicroMasters Program in Supply Chain Management (SCM). The landmark number reflects both the success of the program and the changes transforming professional education as more learners turn to online programs to gain knowledge and improve their lives. MIT CTL, edX, and MITx celebrated the most recent group of program credential earners along with this milestone on Dec 7 with a live webinar celebration. Here are some clips from the event.

The MITx MicroMasters Program in SCM was launched in 2015 to meet the rapidly growing demand for supply chain professionals. Increasing complexity and emerging innovative and technology-infused supply chain processes required new skill sets. The MITx educational platform enables individuals from anywhere to learn continuously and upgrade their skills at their own pace in a flexible, online environment.
The program, designed and delivered by the MIT Center for Transportation and Logistics (CTL), offers 10 courses annually on the edX platform. It has proven immensely popular, having learners from more than 190 countries.
While the courses can be taken for free, learners who need evidence of performance in the program pay a small fee and receive a record of their accomplishments. Today, the SCM program has issued more than 57,000 course certificates and 3,700 program credentials — illustrating how accessible and affordable this program is.
“This is truly a milestone for the MIT supply chain team and MITx and a testament to MIT’s commitment to increasing access to high-quality education on a global scale,” says Anant Agarwal, chief open education officer of 2U/edX.
“This landmark was reached by dedicated, continuous team efforts of a vast community,” remarks Eva Ponce, program executive director. “The perseverance and drive demonstrated by our learners inspire us daily and give us the energy to continue providing exemplary content and a rigorous assessment to our growing global community.”
“The MicroMasters in SCM is a great opportunity to be in touch with the relevant techniques and tools, systems, and technology for supply chain management,” claims learner Vitor from Brazil. “The deep dive into the knowledge makes me feel prepared and confident to face future challenges during the projects I work on.”
The online program is based on the MIT CTL’s Supply Chain Management Masters on-campus program, one of the world's first graduate-level courses in SCM. In 1999, MIT SCM graduated its first class. And In 2022, MIT SCM was named No. 1 in the world by QS Rankings for the third year in a row and by EdUniversal for the seventh.
