We are delighted to share that Dr. Matthias Winkenbach, who directs both the Megacity Logistics Lab and the Computational Analytics, Visualization & Education (CAVE) Lab, has been appointed Principal Research Scientist at the MIT Center for Transportation & Logistics.

Matthias first came to MIT CTL as a Visiting Scholar during and after his doctoral studies and joined full time as a Research Scientist in 2015.

His current research focuses on multi-tier distribution network design in the context of urban logistics and last-mile delivery, urban freight policy and infrastructure design, as well as data analytics and visualization in an urban logistics context. His work and expertise in the fields of urban and last-mile logistics has had a significant impact on the industry. Matthias has collaborated with leading companies in the logistics and transportation sector to develop solutions for complex urban logistics challenges, including optimizing delivery routes, reducing congestion and emissions, and improving customer experience. His research has also contributed to the development of innovative urban freight policies and infrastructure designs that are more sustainable and efficient.

As the newly appointed Principal Research Scientist, Matthias will continue to lead research efforts at the Megacity Logistics Lab and the CAVE Lab, and his work will contribute to shaping the future of urban logistics and transportation.
