Preparedness for retirement is typically assessed in terms of financial resources. However, with Americans living longer and encountering greater complexity in their retirement years, a more comprehensive approach to describing and evaluating longevity preparedness is needed. In 2025, the MIT AgeLab developed the Longevity Preparedness Index (the LPI), a questionnaire tool that holistically assesses an individual’s preparedness for older age. In addition to finances, the LPI measures factors such as health behaviors, social connectedness, and home accessibility, among others. This presentation will introduce the eight domains that comprise the LPI, report the results of the first national assessment of longevity preparedness, and discuss applications and implications of the tool for various stakeholders.
