At a Glance
Based on approximately 20 in-depth interviews with freight transportation professionals across shippers, carriers, logistics providers, and technology companies, this report examines how digital technologies are being used throughout strategic freight procurement and tactical execution. While digital adoption continues to grow, most organizations are enhancing existing processes rather than fundamentally transforming them. Traditional tools such as Excel and email remain deeply embedded, and AI is primarily used to support analysis and decision-making rather than automate it.
The research finds that the greatest opportunities for improvement lie in better data quality, system integration, and more flexible procurement technologies. Although automation is expanding for high-volume, predictable freight, human expertise and long-term carrier relationships remain critical for managing complexity, negotiating rates, and ensuring reliable capacity. Overall, the findings provide a practical view of where freight transportation digitalization stands today—and where the industry is headed next.
