Abstract

By conducting semi-structured interviews and developing a value chain map, we identified and quantified the business costs of each actor in the distribution chain of pharmaceuticals in Zambia and Zimbabwe. We then estimated how these costs translate into the mark-ups of two essential medicines, M1 and O1. These calculations are based on a small yet representative sample size of wholesalers and pharmacists who we interviewed. These interviews gave insight into the trade-offs of working capital, warehouse and transportation costs. These topics can inform HealthCo’s[1] distribution strategies in these areas by highlighting expected effects of wholesaler cost reduction to patient price.
