Megacities: the Supply Chain Frontier

Megacities – cities with a population of at least 10 million people – are increasing in both number and size, and their share of world GDP is expected to grow from about 14% to over 20% in a decade. Most of the 23 megacities that currently exist are located in emerging markets.

Up until now research on the megacity phenomenon has centered on the urban landscape, people mobility and managing traffic congestion. MIT CTL’s Megacity Logistics Lab research project focuses on the special supply chain demands of these sprawling urban centers.

This is the third of the megacity workshops scheduled in 2012 as part of the work in the MIT Megacity Logistics Lab. Previous workshops included Mexico City, Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.

A Global Outlook of Megacity Logistics

This workshop will offer a unique opportunity to discuss and envision world-class operations in future megacities. Worskhop invitees from around the world will share experiences of megacity logistics in North America, Latin America, Asia and Africa.

Workshop participants are expected to actively engage with speakers and share their own experiences throughout the day.

Who should attend?

Any supply chain professional interested in designing and planning global distribution operations into growing emerging markets needs to understand the unique urban contexts of megacities. We also expect discussions and learnings to help innovations in logistics operations in major urban areas in the US and Europe.

How to participate

This is an invitation only event organized by the MIT Center for Transportation & Logistics. A limited number of seats have been reserved for Supply Chain Exchange Partners. Please contact Dr. Edgar E Blanco (eblanco@mit.edu), Director of the Megacity Logistics Lab if you are interested in attending.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I register?

Please contact Dr. Edgar Blanco (eblanco@mit.edu) for registration information.

What is the cost of this workshop?
This workshop will be free of charge.

Where is the workshop being held?
The workshop will be held at MIT Faculty Club. Click here for a map.

When does the workshop officially begin and end?
The check-in and informal networking will begin at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, Nov 8th, and adjourn at approximately 4:30 p.m. When booking your return flight, take into consideration the following recommendations for travel time and security checks at Logan: allow two hours for a domestic flight and three hours for an international flight.

Are accommodations provided?
No, each person is responsible for his/her own accommodations.

Where should I stay?
Guests are responsible for their own hotel accommodations. We do not have a block of rooms reserved. However, the hotel property most conveniently located to the campus is the Marriott Cambridge Boston.

Marriott Cambridge Boston
Two Cambridge Center
50 Broadway
Cambridge MA 02142
617-494-6600

For additional accommodation listings, please see Visiting CTL; however, please note that the room rates do not vary greatly for those hotel properties in proximity to MIT.

Where is the nearest airport?
Boston's Logan International Airport.

What is the best way to travel from the airport to the workshop?
To get to MIT from the airport, we strongly suggest taking a cab. The trip will take anywhere from 15-30 minutes, and the fare is roughly $30-35. The cab fare from Logan is always a bit more than the return, because a surcharge at the airport and a tunnel toll add approximately $5 to the total fare.

If you live locally and prefer public transportation, take the MBTA Red Line to the Kendall/MIT stop. It is a short walk from the T.

Should I rent a car?
We do not recommend renting a car. The expense on top of poorly marked streets and lack of available parking makes having a car more of a nuisance than a convenience.

If I drive, how do I get there and where can I park?
If you are renting a car or will be driving, MapQuest and Google Map offer excellent mapping services to get you from your doorstep to MIT.

The nearest self-parking garage is adjacent to the Cambridge Marriott. Rates are approximately $20/day. This garage is not owned or operated by the Marriott.

Addresses for your mapping requests: 1 Amherst St., Cambridge (Muckley Building) and the nearest parking garage is adjacent to 50 Broadway, Cambridge.

What should I wear?
Appropriate attire is business casual; no ties or suit coats are necessary.

What if I have a dietary restriction or allergy?
If you have a dietary restriction or allergy, please email CTL Events Coordinator, Nancy Martin,nlmartin@mit.edu to let her know.

Whom should I contact if I have any other questions?

Please email Dr. Edgar Blanco (eblanco@mit.edu) if you have any further questions.
